An open letter to Buffalo’s Melody Martin

Dear Melody,

This is your fairy godmother from Wyoming dropping out of cyberspace to respond to the latest installment on your youtube channel about the Buffalo Sabres. The sadness and frustration you expressed echoed all the to the Rocky Mountains and beyond. It was a heartfelt expression of utter despair.

We hear you and we feel your pain.

As the ‘Official Caboose’ of all things TrainWreck related, I’m here to pass along some tidbits for you and your generation of superfans. It’s about how to survive our legacy of despair as Buffalo sports fans… over a lifetime.

But first I wish to thank you.

You may not be aware of your far-reaching powers to amuse a good many of us scattered all over the internet. You’ve been a great role model for me to get off my duff and use technology to put some great Buffalo sports chatter together that’s fan-based. I’m working on it in large part because of your great ability to connect to the passion we all feel about our beloved CHAMPION-LESS Bills and Sabres. So thank you for being a continued inspiration to stay connected to the homeland.

I first became aware of your youtube channel last year from a friend (Dennis) who said I had to go check out your videos. Anyone watching your reports and updates can quickly see how much you rep what it means to be a diehard superfan of the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. To be Buffalo. You ARE Buffalo.

You also reflect so perfectly the passion and the frustration we all feel about our beloved sports teams in Western New York. And yes, there are moments when everyone’s fan-hood comes perilously close to dying from time to time.

But alas, my dear friend… this too shall pass.

Some of us chronologically challenged folks have had a little experience with the level of frustration you displayed in your recent video. Honestly you pulled at my heart strings because I felt like I was looking at myself, only slightly younger than you are now, pining away for my beleaguered but beloved Bills and Sabres in any given year during the mid-1980s. So many ups and downs for a combined 100+ years of futility… and definitely counting.

Watching you share your angst so authentically was the nudge I needed to get back to business, so thank you for that as well.

You certainly laid out a beauty of an ‘ad-lib’ reaction to what should heretofore be known as “Sabres’ Bloody Monday”, when frustrations were shared by some guys we hoped would bring us a trophy… but instead of just brought us more heartache 🙁

The only part of your video report that made me feel sad was to see the hurt in your eyes, and frankly some emotional exhaustion at this point. Pace yourself, dear friend… you are in this for the long haul. I remember those feelings like they were yesterday… when I was young and full of hope and optimism for the future of our beloved sports teams.

Now I’m old… albeit surprisingly still full of hope and optimism And it’s fans from the homeland like yourself who make us all proud. To know you’re carrying on the tradition of revering our ridiculous sports rituals like a champ gives a lot of us ancients some peace of mind that the love will be carried on and properly nourished in the generations ahead.

So carry on, dear friend. Just know you have a fan in Wyoming who admires the good work you do rallying us together for the common good in Buffalo. I’ll be watching you (like Nurse Ratched always does :)… and maybe we could even connect and collaborate on some sort of technological advancement like a podcast together in the near future. Stay tuned.

Much love,

Your fairy godmother WYO
