It looks like we have another former New York Knicks player that has a problem with the security staff of Madison Square Garden.
Per ESPN.com, Patrick Ewing, minutes after coaching Georgetown to a thrilling victory over rival Villanova in the Big East tournament, said he was annoyed by the security measures he has encountered this week at Madison Square Garden — the hub of his Hall of Fame NBA playing career.
The Hoyas’ 72-71 upset of the top-seeded Wildcats on Thursday was perhaps the most meaningful victory of Ewing’s coaching career. The former New York Knicks star said after the game, however, that he has been “getting stopped” and “accosted” at Madison Square Garden.
“I do want to say one thing, though. I thought this was my building,” Ewing said. “And I feel terrible that I’m getting stopped, accosted, [people] asking for passes.
“Everybody in this building should know who the hell I am, and I’m getting stopped — I can’t move around this building. I was like, ‘What the hell? Is this Madison Square Garden?'”
Hey Patrick, hate to break it to you, but I doubt the 25 year old security guard working at the Garden doesn’t remember who you are. It has been close to 20 years since you last stepped on the floor as a player, and your short lived coaching career at Georgetown has not been anything to brag about. The eleven time All-Star and two time Olympic gold medal champion could never bring an NBA title to New York City. Making it to the NBA Finals twice in his career with the Knicks, Ewing and company fell short both times to the Rockets in 94, and then the Spurs in 99.
The Garden security has been in the news more than the Knicks themselves the last couple of years. We all remember the Charles Oakley incident, and Spike Lee had a run in just over a year ago when he had a disagreement with officials over which elevator he could use.
When you think of the New York Knicks, who is the first player to come to mind? For me, it definitely isn’t Patrick Ewing.
