Today marks possibly the worst sports day in the year. The NFL, NBA, and NHL are all in the middle of their dullest times and every MLB team is off for the All-Star break. That means there's almost nothing to bet on, except the Home Run Derby.
In years past, guys like Ken Griffey Jr. and Josh Hamilton have put on amazing hitting displays. Griffey won the Derby three times and Hamilton set the record with 28 home runs in one round. Tonight should be just as entertaining as the timed rounds have made the event more fun. There's even extra time to be awarded for guys who hit two home runs over 440 feet in a round. Thank you to the MLB for incentivizing these guys to hit some absolute moon shots and realizing WE ALL DIG THE LONG BALL!
This years Derby features the youngest roster ever. Youngsters like Alex Bregman (+1100) and Rhys Hoskins (+900) will surely look to make a name for themselves tonight. The betting favorite is hometown player Bryce Harper at +225. Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguillar is the #1 seed coming into the event, but his odds come right in the middle at +500.
TRAINWRECK LOCK OF THE NIGHT
Schwarber over Bregman (-160)
Schwarbypoo has lost a bunch of weight, but not any power. He still has the ability to get the 440+ foot YABO's to get the extra time and he should have a bit more stamina than in the past. I don't see Bregman getting far as the long-shot to win the whole thing, let alone this match-up.
Petti Roosebelt and Ty B: Freddie Freeman (+750)
This is a big value pick for me and it just so happens I ended up drawing Freddie Freeman in our random selections. Freeman is a 6'5" leftie, so that should give him enough raw power to get the extra time with two homers over 440+ feet each round. If he can do that, then his effortless swing should carry him through the Derby. It all comes down to him surpassing Harper in the 1st round though.
Benji V: Kyle Schwarber (+350)
The dude has hit a home run that still has never come down at Wrigley Field (yes, it's still on top of the scoreboard). I like Schwarber to get the win here as he should be able to save a little more energy than the others, as I think he has the easiest match-up of the 1st round.
So, The Wrecking Crew decided to throw all of our names into a hat and all the contestants' names in another hat so we could randomly each get a representative. Here's who everyone ended up with:
#1 Jesus Aguillar (+500) - Andy vs #8 Rhys Hoskins (+900) - Petti Roosevelt
#4 Alex Bregman (+1100) - Maniac vs #5 Kyle Schawarber (+350) - Topher
#2 Bryce Harper (+225) - Degenerate Al vs #7 Freddie Freeman (+750) Ty B
#3 Max Muncy (+650) - Producer Bers vs #6 Javier Baez (+500) DJ Supreme
