John Deere Classic and the LIV Tour: Portland Preview

via Sporting News

Xander Schauffele fended off the others at the top of the leaderboard and was able to secure first place at the Travelers Championship. This weekend marked Schauffele’s 2nd win of the PGA Tour Season and his 6th career victory on Tour. He is now 8th in the FedEx Cup rankings as he continues to establish himself as one of the world’s best players.

The big story for me, aside from Sahith Theegala continuing his rise as he breaks into the scene this year, was Michael Thorbjornsen. The amatuer made his second start this year at the Travelers and boy did he impress, finishing 15 under par with a 4th place finish. This won’t be the last we hear about Thorbjornsen, the Stanford athlete and Cleveland native showed us he has the game to keep up with the pros at just 20 years old.

Looking ahead now to the John Deere Classic and TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois. Another TPC course this week for the Tour but this time the field is very weak, so there isn’t much I have by way of betting. The Irish Open is taking players away from the John Deere because at this point in the calendar, players try to get across the pond to prepare for The Open Championship.

Last week, if you listened to me, you were a very happy camper as I hit 4 out of 5 bets, including 2 half unit +420 plays and a 4 unit -170 play. I’m looking to stay hot and make you guys some more money this week, but given that it’s a light week, I will keep it somewhat simple.

Here are my official bets for the 2022 John Deere Classic:

– 1 unit on Lucas Glover +210 to finish Top 20
– 1 unit on J.T. Poston +210 to finish Top 20
– 4 units on Lucas Glover -250 to make the cut
– 4 units on J.T. Poston -250 to make the cut

The Lucas Glover trend this week has everything to do with his performance at this particular event. He is the defending champion here and he historically plays well at TPC Deere Run so there is a lot to like about his chances.

J.T. Poston fired a Sunday 64 last week to get him a T2 finish. There is a lot to like about his performance at TPC River Highlands and there is no reason to think he won’t continue the good play this week.

In other golf news, the LIV Tour takes on the Portland, Oregon area this week. Though I can’t find odds for this event anywhere, I highly recommend tuning in. I watched a little bit of the London event and I was very entertained. This one should be even better because there is a stronger field with bigger names involved.

The course is actually made up of holes from two different courses on the same property (Pumpkin Ridge GC), which is a very cool twist in my opinion. I am excited to see the Koepka brothers on the same team along with the addition of Pat Perez, Patrick Reed, Bryson Dechambeu, Matt Wolff, and Abraham Ancer into the mix. So if you are bored this weekend and looking for something to watch instead of the John Deere Classic, the Portland stop of the LIV Tour is on youtube on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
