Charles Schwab Challenge Provides Free Money Opportunity?

Coming off of this past weekend’s dramatic finish at the PGA Championship, the Charles Schwab Challenge has a tough act to follow. The Challenge, held at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, was won last year by Jason Kokrak at 14 under par.

Colonial doesn’t give players a ton of trouble historically, so don’t expect the scores to be high like they were at the PGA Championship last week at Southern Hills. Strategically placed bunkers and tight landing areas both off the tee and on approach shots defend this course well and make up for the vast amount of birdie chances that they give the players.

From a betting perspective, this tournament boasts a strong field including World Number One Scottie Scheffler, who I will be betting at 10-1 to win. Scottie being from Texas has a lot to do with this pick, the fact that he is the world’s best golfer is just another reason.

Don’t overthink the betting this week. Players love to show out when they are close to home. Along with Scheffler, I am placing bets on:
Jordan Spieth (14-1)
Bryson Dechambeau (50-1)

All three of my picks this week are Texans. Bryson is still fighting a hand injury so there is always still a chance that he withdraws before the event begins, but he is my long shot pick at 50-1. We have seen his talent and what he can do when he is confident and rolling, and what better time to pull it all together again than when he is playing close to home in an under-the-radar tournament the week after a major championship.

Jordan Spieth, another Texan, has me picking him because, much like Scheffler, Spieth is playing great golf as of late. He has good history at this event, finishing in 2nd place last year. One of the most talented putters of the golf ball, Spieth is always on my radar, but this week, given the location and his recent play leaving him in the mix at the top of the leaderboard many weeks, it is hard not to bet him.

If your sportsbook has odds on players to finish Top 10 or Top 20, these picks apply to those too. These are much safer than betting the outright winner of the tournament and would not be surprised at all if at least 2 out of the 3 guys that I picked end up in the Top 10 or Top 20.

This is the last tournament before Josh Allen’s big golf match next Wednesday, so enjoy viewing this strong field at a Historic and Gorgeous Venue and brush up on your golf viewing skills before Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes take down Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers next week.
